Hopes for a snow day
Anxious noses fog glass
As sky spits flurries.

Index card with pen and colored pencil:

Landscape for a tree
A new seed to come to life
A memorial.
Art Prescription: This is the background for a new tree that I’m going to paint live at UNC Hospital tomorrow. These trees serve a humbling presence for those in need of memorial and prayers. This tree is going into a pediatric unit and is especially for the nurses who care for the sick and dying children. I worked pediatrics for nine of my nursing career years. I’m touched to be able to provide a dose of art for these nurses who put their hearts on the line every day.

When Lucy’s cousin
Came in to town, all heads turned
Coat of many hues.
Art Prescription: Regardless of our hue…we are all the same underneath.
Watercolor, pen and ink:

Big wet snow flurries
Land softly on horses backs
Lots of hay for warmth.
Art Prescription: Beautiful snow fell steadily as I went about feeding the horses this morning. So pretty, big white flakes against the browns and greens of the woods. Put out extra hay to keep the herd warm.
Watercolor:

Wispy cirrus clouds
Blown by strong westerly winds
Move east across sky.
Art Prescription: Cirrus clouds typically point to fair weather, and today was mild and warm. Snow flurries in tomorrows forecast.
Acrylic:

Seven umbrellas
Nice and dry back at the house
Walking in the rain!
Art Prescription: Although had I been covered by an umbrella, I may not have seen the owl !
Colored pencil:

A huddle of leaves
A January still life
Together we fall.
Art Prescription: Perfect temperature for a nature walk. Lots of birds singing, robins, nuthatches, cedar waxwings, chickadees, cardinals. I was looking to see what might be coming out of the ground, but instead found this bunch of leaves an interesting subject.
Pen and Ink Sketch en plein air in my art journal and colored pencil once home:

Snow-bound in cabin
Deep in the woods, a fire roars
No place to go now.
Art Prescription: What?… Wake?… Get back to work? …Well it was good while it lasted!!
Acrylic on paper:

Snow in the forecast
Low of twenty-one degrees
Winter in the south.
Art Prescription: Snow flurries are in the forecast which tends to excite folks in the south. Usually it’s lots of bread and milk, beer, and wine sold for sort of a tease.
Index card with collage and improvisational sewing:

Out of the purple
A field of wild irises
She ran with the wind.
Art Prescription: Sometimes you just have to go with it…
