Haiku June 5, 2012 Change

Metamorphosis

Can we measure hope, dreams, wants?

Really steal a kiss?

Art Prescription:  Some of the most poignant parts of life are immeasurable. Things we cannot fill a bucket with and say, okay I’m done. Like the breeze drifting through an open window, life can be difficult to constrain, put it all in nice order. The breeze has no motive. There is no way to measure the luxurious feeling of a cool evening breeze across your face…it just is.  We live in a world full of comparisons and judgement…what if the most important things of all are the things we cannot measure or see. What if we could be fluid and flexible, like water, change effortlessly?

Haiku June 4, 2012 Choice

Crystal clear wine glass

Ah, what gets poured, happiness

Fill up on your choice.

Art Prescription:  Today, my birthday, I meditate on choice. I believe how you choose to live, how you choose to think, what you fill your life with… a glass half-empty or half full…is very well what you end up with.  You can spend your days waiting for the “perfect” thing to come along and “make” you happy, or you can choose to fill your life with contentment and gratitude. For me, working towards my goal to touch people’s lives with art feeds my spirit everyday. I can claim to be swept along by any old current in life, or choose!! Choose the direction I want to swim to save my very own life!! This one very precious life….go ahead now, jump in!!

Haiku June 3, 2012 Bee Balm

Red spiky bee balm

Sweet nectar for hummingbirds

Buzz in, hover, drink.

Art Prescription:  I have two patches of bee balm in my garden, and the one nearest the house blooms first. I can look out my kitchen window and see dazzling hummers coming to and fro, their iridescent color reflecting in the sunlight. As in life, you can attract what you need and what makes you hum in various ways. My point of view is that of having something real, something that goes beyond the external (the glossy pages of a magazine), life in the here and now…inner peace comes from the inside out.

Haiku June 1, 2012 Know Thyself

Rain pitter patters

Tree frogs lull,  solitude reins

Peace, quiet, steady.

Art Prescription:  A good steady rain on my studio roof makes for the perfect solitude. While I wait for my paint to dry, I stretch out on the floor and just listen. I’m most peaceful when I have time and space to create…to let my muse wander. It’s important to know oneself – to know what makes you tick – to know what you crave, what you must have to live fully. Know thyself – do you?

Haiku May 31, 2012 Poolside

Splash of chlorine wafts

Smell of coconut lotion

Hot, it’s poolside time.

Art Prescription:  My neighborhood pool is open for business. People are out of their winter hide-away and into swim-suits by the pool. Kids splash about with floats while mothers and fathers tend to their youngest swimmer. Happy memories for these kids, summer at the pool. As a kid, summer lasted a lifetime, and the pool was the center of our universe…swim for fun, swim practice, swim meet, swim all day long. Course their were Popsicles  involved, especially during the break each hour for “rest” time. Each season brings about a new set of memories old and new…it’s summer time!

Haiku May 30, 2012 Luscious Hydrangeas

Lush hydrangea

Rainbow colors of blue, pink

Big vase of Southern.

Art Prescription:  All the spring rain has made my hydrangeas very happy. They are covered in big blue blossoms and rich green leaves. Not a shy flower to have in the garden…they bloom shades of pink and/or blue depending on the kind of soil they are in. I think we humans bloom differently in the kind of environment we are in too…so think about where and how you want to plant your roots!

Haiku May 28,2012 Gardenia

White gardenia

Sweet fragrant flower, silky

Fills a room with scent.

Art Prescription:  There is a lot going on in my garden. I cut a small arrangement of fragrant gardenias to bring in and enjoy. No wonder the bees and butterflies are romanced. Bring a little sunshine inside!! A toast to nature…

Haiku May 27, 2012 Wide Country

Vast flat fields, new crops

Red barns, white houses, horses

Sky meets horizon.

Art Prescription:  Took a road trip to Clinton, NC today.  A relatively short ride from Chapel Hill lands us in farm country and field after field of fresh green crops. In NC farmers grow tobacco, soybean, cotton, corn, wheat, tomatoes, cows, pigs, and families. What a total juxtaposition from New York City! Joy to be able to see and experience both. Where you are is where you are, and if you enjoy the scenery it makes life sweet.
