Two weeks into May
Heavy rain, creek side dense green
Frogs moan with pleasure.

Outfit management
Lunch at the Umstead Hotel
Afternoon at farm.
Art Prescription: Freshly showered, makeup-check, and gussied up, I met two friends for lunch at the Umstead Hotel, an upscale hotel and spa close to home. I had the fried green tomato BLT and fried okra appetizer, yes we are in the south. From there I drove straight to the farm to meet the farrier, who was the beneficiary of my other half of BLT. He was thankful. I then swung by my art-groups art show for the 2nd Friday Art-walk. Wow! Proud of my group!

Blows off at canter
Rolls onto the sand in ring
“Fetch my hat Bama.”
Art Prescription: So I should have had my camera ready for this!! Visited a new barn today. When the trainer’s hat blew off, she called her dog to fetch it and bring it to her on horse-back. Adorable. I captured a quick sketch in my mind and here it is…
Index card sketch:

Through deep shaded woods
And grassy fields by the cows
Spun the breadths of blue!
Art Prescription: My horse under me connects me to the ground, the world, my life. So beautiful to see my dear friends on their horses ahead of me. All baggage left at the barn. Only joy rides along with us now. Blue Skies.

Happy birthday pie
Cheesecake with graham-cracker crust
Treat for my dear love!
Art Prescription: Happy Birthday Sam! I love you!

Two different nests
One for now, one for later
Industrious bird.
Art Prescription: I’ve had bluebirds building a nest inside a box in the yard for a month. Curious about this behavior, I asked the crew at Carolina Birders. Evidently these birds are building an alternate nest. While the pair takes care of sitting on eggs or feeding current fledglings, they spend their mornings building another nest. So if something happens to the first nest they have a new nest to lay eggs in or they may just use it as the next home. Fascinating how nature equips itself with procreation!!

Blue-Grey Knat Catcher
Builds her spring nest with lichens
So industrial!
Art Prescription: Found a Blue-Grey Knat Catcher’s nest at Mason Farm. What a joy to watch the female sit and the male fly in for occasional relief.

Road-side clean up crew
Beauty comes in many ways
The turkey vulture.
Art Prescription: As I drove about country roads this morning, I encountered several instances where turkey vultures were having their breakfast. Now I know this is when most go oooooooohhhhh! But perhaps we need to have more respect for these street cleaners. I didn’t paint one because I do not have a great photo reference, but next time you see some big wings circling high above give credit to the vultures of our world.
Index card with stamp and colored pencil:

Hey, wake up it’s spring
Fast, furious thunder-storms
Birds bathe in run-off.
Art Prescription: Caught in a down-pour today, home wet. And thankful for natures reassuring rhythms.
