Haiku June 1, 2012 Know Thyself

Rain pitter patters

Tree frogs lull,  solitude reins

Peace, quiet, steady.

Art Prescription:  A good steady rain on my studio roof makes for the perfect solitude. While I wait for my paint to dry, I stretch out on the floor and just listen. I’m most peaceful when I have time and space to create…to let my muse wander. It’s important to know oneself – to know what makes you tick – to know what you crave, what you must have to live fully. Know thyself – do you?

Haiku May 31, 2012 Poolside

Splash of chlorine wafts

Smell of coconut lotion

Hot, it’s poolside time.

Art Prescription:  My neighborhood pool is open for business. People are out of their winter hide-away and into swim-suits by the pool. Kids splash about with floats while mothers and fathers tend to their youngest swimmer. Happy memories for these kids, summer at the pool. As a kid, summer lasted a lifetime, and the pool was the center of our universe…swim for fun, swim practice, swim meet, swim all day long. Course their were Popsicles  involved, especially during the break each hour for “rest” time. Each season brings about a new set of memories old and new…it’s summer time!

Haiku May 30, 2012 Luscious Hydrangeas

Lush hydrangea

Rainbow colors of blue, pink

Big vase of Southern.

Art Prescription:  All the spring rain has made my hydrangeas very happy. They are covered in big blue blossoms and rich green leaves. Not a shy flower to have in the garden…they bloom shades of pink and/or blue depending on the kind of soil they are in. I think we humans bloom differently in the kind of environment we are in too…so think about where and how you want to plant your roots!

Haiku May 28,2012 Gardenia

White gardenia

Sweet fragrant flower, silky

Fills a room with scent.

Art Prescription:  There is a lot going on in my garden. I cut a small arrangement of fragrant gardenias to bring in and enjoy. No wonder the bees and butterflies are romanced. Bring a little sunshine inside!! A toast to nature…

Haiku May 27, 2012 Wide Country

Vast flat fields, new crops

Red barns, white houses, horses

Sky meets horizon.

Art Prescription:  Took a road trip to Clinton, NC today.  A relatively short ride from Chapel Hill lands us in farm country and field after field of fresh green crops. In NC farmers grow tobacco, soybean, cotton, corn, wheat, tomatoes, cows, pigs, and families. What a total juxtaposition from New York City! Joy to be able to see and experience both. Where you are is where you are, and if you enjoy the scenery it makes life sweet.

Haiku May 26, 2012 Yard Work

Sure euphoria

All day in the yard, flowers

Green, pink, and purple.

Art Prescription:  A far cry from Times Square, we spent an entire day working in our yard. Total bliss! Planted new vinca, inpatients, cosmos, purple petunias, basil, and two cherry tomatoes. May just snip that basil for a pasta and tomato dinner. Sam would not let me “play” until I had all my follow-up emails sent. I’m still processing the show…wow! If you have a dream, be persistent, follow your heart!

Haiku May 25, 2012 Song Birds

Song birds with fledglings

Chatter about in the trees

Fluffy heads, new wings!

Art Prescription:  Extremely happy to be watering my flowers and watching back-yard action. Chickadees, Titmice, and Cardinals call out to their mates and fledglings, giving them direction about their next move. Uncoordinated, fluffy-feathered babies land on our deck seeking food. A new generation of song birds, and fodder for new art!! My surroundings inspire my muse!!

Haiku May 24, 2012 Hydrangea

Big, bold, lacy, blue

Composite globes of color

Hydrangea blooms!

Art Prescription:  This time of year everything is busting out! With lots of “April Showers Brings May Flowers,” we have a garden to delight the senses. Today I cut a big vase full of blue hydrangea blossoms, some as big as a football. Hydrangeas are composite flowers, which means each big blossom is made up of hundreds of small flowers, all coming together in color and shape to make a bold statement. Here is a hydrangea I painted a couple of years ago. Tomorrow I will paint a BIG BOLD LOOSE WATERCOLOR! Stay tuned…

Surtex 2012 New York City!!

Sam and I arrived in New York by 10 am Saturday. Took a frantic taxi ride to the Jacob Javits Center to set the booth up.

When you first get there the isles are filled with crates and cases, the beep, beep, beep of cranes and other industrial machines sound off against bare walls. As exhibitors file in the booths begin to shine with art and design.

You walk out of an industrial zone and the next morning the carpet is down and the show is open for business!!

We spent the next full three days meeting other exhibitors (this is awesome!), art directors, creative directors, product design and development directors, publishers, buyers, retailers, merchandise managers,  CEO’s, presidents,  licensing directors, fine art companies, poster companies, manufacturers, and new artists walking the show to learn about the industry. Also we took turns walking The National Stationery Show.

Now the work begins! Follow-up Follow-up Follow-up

I have to say I’m most excited about the opportunity to have my art licensed for stamps, fabric, and kits to encourage creativity in others. To share the joy of art-making is part of my mission via The Art Prescription!! Cheers! Beverly
