Velvety new leaves

Shimmer in late day sunshine

Emerge fresh and green.

Art Prescription:  Spring has sprung and new growth is exploding everywhere. Greens are abundant, nature’s favorite color. Matching greens with paint is a lesson in color theory…is it a yellow-green, a blue-green, a cool green, a warm green? One of my favorite exercises is to mix greens. Start with a cool blue and cool yellow, then warm blue and warm yellow. See how many shades of green you can mix!!

A lonely swing creaks

As breeze blows it back and forth

Playground is empty.

Art Prescription:  Think of the difference in mood a busy playground with squealing children can set versus a quiet and empty Saturday at the school yard. Through art and writing we can express and share mood with color, line, and words. How has your Monday been?

Bright sunshine spring clean

Cobwebs cleared from mind, garage

Salt bath and Rose!

Art Prescription:  After a very busy week, I took today “off.” This involved washing my van, yard work, cleaning out garage…etc. Spring cleaning can be rejuvenating. My reward a lavender, eucalyptus, salt, hot bath while reading poetry and sipping a lovely Rose…life is good!

Brownies scent the house

Cats purr while birds build new nests

Wonder fills spirit.

Art Prescription: Taught an Art Prescription (TM) class today and as usual was touched and amazed at the human heart and the willingness to create and share. And my wonderful husband has cooked a special dinner!

Haiku March 30, 2012

She softly chortles

He lands confident above

A brand new nest waits.

Art Prescription: It’s so delightful to observe birds in spring. My new blue bird box has interested chickadees and blue birds. I’m not sure who will end up with the property. I’m teaching an Art Prescription workshop tomorrow. We will be working with collage and expressive painting. Paint, drip, spatter, cut, glue, write….anything goes!!

Still cool spring morning

Moments of silence before

The bus leads to work.

Art Prescription: Why do people crave power? What does power mean? Money? Status? You are the “boss?” It is so easy to let others sweep you up into their power play. Use your creative mind to find balance in every situation.

Black and white swift flight

Chickadee moves in new box

Meant for the blue bird.

Art Prescription: After installing my brand new blue bird box, I’ve been patiently observing to see if there is an interest for a new nest. Next thing I know, I see a chickadee zooming back and forth! She has probably claimed the new house. You have to watch to see!!

She swoops in with grace

Masterpiece, straw, grass, and moss

Her nest has carpet!

Art Prescription:  I discovered to my delight that a sparrow has begun a nest on my back porch. I watched her for a while as she brought piece by piece to prepare her home. It’s an amazing amount of work and a thing of beauty, a bird’s nest. How can one get any work done while there is so much nature to see?

Warm scented March breeze

Dogwoods shimmer white in sun

Late day bird chorus.

Art Prescription:  My late afternoon walks may be my favorite part of my day. There is so much happening outside. It’s like nature is on fast-forward. Dogwood flowers dot the woods, and most people think the white “petals” are the flowers. Actually the white parts are the sepals, and the actual flowers are the tiny yellow parts in the middle. If you have dogwoods go look closely at a bloom.

Sandy garden path

Yellow glow and purple phlox

Cool, refreshing walk!

Art Prescription: I went to a Haiku in the Garden workshop today at the North Carolina Botanical Garden. So much to learn about this little poem called “haiku.” As with everything, simpler is better, and to get down to the bare essentials of our senses is art. Practice…practice…practice…
