Haiku December 5, 2012 Attitude

Her breath touched my cheek

Felt a wisp of hair, rose scent

My secret sister.

Art Prescription:  We have three cats, two boys and one girl, who is their mother. We fostered the whole gang intending to keep two kittens. The mother cat won our hearts immediately! Her name is Maya and she is phenomenal! This is a fun sketchbook idea. Draw a line or series of lines. Now what do you see!

Haiku December 26, 2012 Bird Count

December bird count

Binoculars, sketchbook, time

Five miles of shear bliss!!

Art Prescription:  Yes! I am a total bird geek. Love watching these colorful, delightful, big-brown eyed beings as they dance, prance, look for food, pick berries, or fly from tree to tree. Here is my sketchbook list from Christmas Day:

Haiku December 7, 2012 Predictable Cat

Meow howl for chow

Long lick both chops, clean face, purr

Repeat twice a day!

Art Prescription:  We have cats! Three! I’d love a dog too, but for now the cats rule! Artist throughout history have studied the long and graceful lines of cat behavior. My favorite is Steinlen! If you have pets they are perfect for gestural sketching…try and capture the essence of  dog or cat -itude!

Haiku December 4, 2012 Big Sticks

teal ad 72

Little dog, huge will

Fetches sticks twice his own size

Lays at master’s feet!

Art Prescription:  On morning walk ran into Joe and Frodo. Frodo is a Jack Russell Terrier. He came bounding out of the woods with a branch about 6 feet long. A hilarious sight. Joe said, “That’s not a big stick!. Go get a big stick!” Frodo darted into the woods and came out carrying a stick at least twice his size…he thinks he is a big dog!! Lesson:  Go for the big sticks…even if you have to growl a bit along the way!! New ad!

Haiku November 27, 2012 Grey and Rainy

A warm cozy couch

Sandwiched between two kitties

Remedies grey day!

Art Prescription:  On a grey, cold, rainy day it’s simple human nature to nap! If you have pets, then you know as soon as you hit supine you will have company. I sometimes have wonderful ideas while my body rests, and my mind wanders!

Haiku September 30, 2012 Kudzu Giraffes

Leafy green giraffes

Kudzu drapes trees, purple blooms

Smell like grape Nehi.

Art Prescription:  Kudzu is an invasive vine that grows over entire patches of trees making shapes for the imagination. A lover of shades of green, I find its heart-shaped leaves attractive, and grape- soda scented flowers must lure many insects. But Kudzu can take over in an unwanted fashion.  We have a local farm here in North Carolina called “Cudzu Farm.” http://www.cud-zu.com/index.htm

The Farm
The Cheek farm has been in Margaret’s family for over 101 years. Her father and her grandfather were both dairy farmers. She is one of four children born in the farm house.

When Margaret and Charlie moved back to the farm 12 years ago, the barn and the fields were overgrown with kudzu. Someone said if they wanted to get rid of the kudzu, they should buy a couple of goats. They bought 2 goats, then someone gave them 3 more and later those goats had babies. Today, they have 9 goats and the kudzu is well under control.

Then their neighbors, all dairy farmers, started asking, “What else are your goats good for?” That’s when Charlie and Margaret started making goats’ milk soap.

Today, after 10 years and many batches of trial and error, they have perfected a unique bar of all natural goat milk soap that not contain any additives, colorants, preservatives, stablizers, or chemicals. It is highly praised for its moisturizing properties.

Haiku September 9, 2012 Tree Frog

Little green tree frog

Naps in cool shade, long leaf fronds

Waits for buggy night!

Art Prescription: Animal medicine this weekend has been frogs. From “Medicine Cards: The discovery of power through the ways of animals,” by Jamie Sams and David Carson, illustrated by Angela C. Werneke:

“Frog speaks of new life and harmony through its rain song. The deep tones of Frog’s ‘ribet’ are said to be a call to the Thunder Beings: thunder, lightning, and rain. The ‘ribet’ is the heartbeat that comes into harmony with Father Sky and calls for the replenishment needed. Call to Frog and find peace in the joy of taking time to give to yourself. A part of this giving is cleansing yourself of any person, place, or thing that does not contribute to your new state of serenity and replenishment.”

Haiku August 20, 2012 Social Beings

Quiet studio

Walk to seek social contact

Neighborhood friends, dogs!

Art Prescription:  Art can be a lonely endeavor at times. Creativity needs quiet, and as humans we also need social contact to thrive. I mix it up by going to the Wellness Center most mornings to swim or do yoga, and then round out my day with an evening walk in my neighborhood. Since we have cats, I get to say hello and pet all my dog friends, I like their owners too! Balance is the key…how do you maintain balance?

Haiku August 17, 2012 Playful

Second childhood, play

A sense of humor each day

Laughter, amusement.

Art Prescription:  Going on twenty-one years of marriage my husband makes me laugh often.  Sleepy and heading for the coffee this morning I heard him say “I’ll feed the fowl.” Instead of a feeder which the squirrels destroy, we put food out on our deck for the birds (and squirrels) each day.  I said back,  “I’ll feed the yowl,” our three cats. Easily amused this started my day off with some humor!!
