Haiku August 8, 2012 Nature Versus Nuture

Young fledgling flitters

Steady determination

Parents tag team, feed.

Art Prescription:  I so enjoy watching various birds come to feast on sunflower seeds on my deck. Now families of birds return, parents dutifully feeding their feather flapping young. These newly hatched fluffy youngsters hop with excitement behind a parent waiting for food to be delivered beak to beak.  Satisfied for a few moments the toddler sits with a full belly, and the parent gets some seed for themselves. Doesn’t take long before the wiggle of hind feathers starts again and the parents break is over. The drive nature has to protect and launch their offspring is remarkable!

Haiku July 12, 2012 Your Story

Life is a moment

Happy dogs panting, pure love

Total devotion.

Art Prescription:  After work today I set out on a bike ride around my neighborhood. I always run into all my vicarious dogs. I love dogs and with three cats in the house, I have to get my doggy time during my outings. Dogs are all about the moment. Tail wagging, leash tangling, glad to see you, joy! I think dogs, and cats, live in the moment. They are either asleep, playing, walking, or eating. They don’t analyze the past or worry about the future, unless it’s when their next treat is. We humans worry and think about it all. Saw this today here http://commonhealth.wbur.org/2012/01/storytelling-for-mental-health-boost

“The actual things that happen to you may have less of an impact on your mental health than the things you tell yourself about them.”

It seems how we define our experiences makes a difference in how we approach life. Are you a survivor or a victim?

Brown-eyed gentle horse

Stands confident, guards Times Square

Officer sits proud.

Art Prescription:  These horses amaze me. Amid the millions of people, honking horns and sirens, they stand calm and sure. Just beautiful. Not surprising that they themselves land in the photos of tourist from all over the world. Guess brown eyes speak a universal language!

Haiku May 17, 2012 Cleansing

If I wash the sheets

My tear stained pillow cases,

Will it go away?

Art Prescription:  I should be madly rushing about to do my final Surtex prep, and I will because the show must go on. Life grabs your attention in not so subtle ways. Stops you in your tracks and reaches into your core beliefs. A stray cat has touched my life. After or during a good cry,  I always, always turn to poetry for a tincture for the soul, words that speak of the human reality of love and loss.

The Road Not Taken

Two roads diverged in a yellow wood,

And sorry I could not travel both

And be one traveler, long I stood

And looked down one as far as I could

To where it bent in the undergrowth;

Then took the other, as just as fair,

And having perhaps the better claim,

Because it was grassy and wanted wear;

Though as for that the passing there

Had worn them really about the same,

And both that morning equally lay

In leaves no step had trodden black.

Oh, I kept the first for another day!

Yet knowing how way leads on to way,

I doubted if I should every come back.

I shall be telling this with a sigh

Somewhere ages and ages hence:

Two roads diverged in a wood, and I-

I took the one less traveled by,

And that has made all the difference.

Haiku May 12, 2012 Stray

Stray, wander, digress

Sidetracked, off balance, sojourn

Find your way back home.

Art Prescription:  I’m still trying to find out who owns the sweet black and white kitty who has taken up residence on my street. You cannot come or go from my neighborhood without seeing a sign announcing FOUND CAT! It seems the busier life gets, the more challenges come your way. Hope the owner calls me…if not will make the next decision. By the way, she is sweet!! and oh dear, I’m thinking of names….

Black and white kitty

Where do you live pretty cat?

Friendly meow-er.

Art Prescription:  Oh dear for the 5th day in a row there is a black and white cat wandering around my street. I, of course, gave it food and water and some attention. By today I am highly suspicious she is a stray. Put signs up around neighborhood and rode my bike around to ask, “do you know this cat?” Why would the universe send me a stray cat right now with Surtex, New York coming immediately? There is always time to love…

Haiku May 6, 2012 Tree Frog

Little green tree frog

Iridescent shine, black eyes

Sticky feet, jumper.

Art Prescription:  A weekend for reptiles! Saw two black snakes…they are good. And at the end of my day today the cutest little green tree frog hopped into my studio. Hello fella! Directed him outside where the evening catch is. Surtex is about 2 weeks away and I’m feeling a little wound tight. Good to have nature hop into my journey to remind me that it’s all about joy!

Haiku May 1, 2012 WOW

Some days have more WOW!

Challenges, worries, heart-break

Life throws you a pitch.

Art Prescription:  Started my day rushing my cat Maya to the vet. She is home now after being sedated and having an abscess drained…poor girl. When something like this happens all of a sudden everything else in your universe comes to a screeching halt as you realize there is nothing more important than this little creature. Life, love, gets your total attention.

Wren chortles tree top

Beagle bays at larger dog

Footsteps patter path.

Art Prescription:  Beautiful day. Hard to stay focused and get work done. Sam home and we went for a walk. This time of day I find much amusement in the neighborhood dogs. Sounds tell us so much about what is going on in our environment!
