Haiku August 28 All Is Well

Aware of subtle

Shift in light, songs of crickets

All is well, all is…

Art Prescription:  I love the subtle nuances of each day as the season begins to shift. In an effort to spread good vibes, I’m giving away a couple of index card pieces a week. They can be used to stick in your mates lunch, pin to your desk space, or send to a friend. They are so fun and I hope to share this pick-me-up art! Pregnant with Possibility August 26, 2013

He holds her steady

She carries eight months in front

Soon will be strolling!

Art Prescription:  Ah, the life cycle…went to the North Carolina Botanical Gardens today to sketch. This time of year the flowers are starting to go to seed, preparation for a new spring, new plants. The shapes and textures of pods are interesting. At some point I shall do a study of pods. For now the flowers are still in bloom, and the butterflies, moths, and hummingbirds are abundant…heaven.

Beautiful Morning August 25,2013

I wish I could put

A morning like this in a

Box, save forever!

Art Prescription:  A perfect morning and day…the reason people move to NC. Cool to walk and comfortable to work in garden. I actually did some very productive puttering. I’ve had my years of Bon Appetite magazines in the garage to go through and get my favorite recipes. I know it’s irrational as everything is online, but somehow those actual magazines represent a part of my life. I’m trying to practice letting-go…

Time is a Thief August 23, 2013

Evaporation

Into thin air! Where’s summer?

Time, she is a thief!

Art Prescription:  Anyone else feeling like you blinked your eyes and time has moved on? Perhaps this is one of the healing effects of art. You make a mark, there you have left evidence of your precious life!  Art moves us…

Art Prescription August 18, 2013 Splatter

Splatter therapy

Large canvas, freedom to play

Real? or under art?

Art Prescription:  What started out as a tree painting on a big canvas – 5 ft tall – became an expression of loose brush-strokes and spattering…so therapeutic!! I will return to this tomorrow to paint a “proper” tree, but for now, ahhhhhh…cheaper than counseling and oh!! the color!!

Haiku August 12, 2013 Grass Ballet

Life in the fast lane

Most will miss the show with speed

While grass does ballet.

Art Prescription:  Today’s photograph was captured by Susan Carver Williams. Susan is a photojournalist. She meanders about the back roads of Eastern Tennessee, she calls them her “Sunday Drives,” with a sharp eye that captures the essence of this place she calls home. I’m always thrilled to see one of her posts. I sit back and take a drive with her, seeing through her lens the rolling beauty of Tennessee.  Susan says,

” I rarely know where I’m heading when I leave the house with my camera. I just pick a random direction and look for whatever catches my attention and/or a road I’ve never turned down. I’ve been temporarily lost a few times on these photographic adventures, but never disappointed. There’s always something that makes the turn and the miles worthwhile. Some days I’ve inadvertently spent 5-6 hours in the car, driving as slowly as traffic will allow (which is why I love backroads), stopping on a dime or turning around and backtracking, just seeing where the next turn takes me. Bev, my drive-abouts with the camera are MY Art Prescription.”

What captured my attention with this image is the metaphorical view of the highway and the lovely grass and wildflowers growing on the shoulder. I’m glad Susan drives “as slowly as traffic with allow.” Otherwise we might have missed the Grass Ballet! Thank you Susan for sharing your work on the Art Prescription!

Haiku August 11, 2013 Layers

Layers make a whole

Patience wins over hurry

Take your time, indulge.

Art Prescription:  I’m as guilty as the next for trying to hurry-up and get to the next task…and in the mean-time, text a friend, look at Facebook, and check e-mail.  We are such a culture of multitasking that it’s no wonder Attention Deficit Disorder is rampant. This afternoon I painted in my garden. For several hours I did nothing but take brush to paint to canvas. Sublime! This has some layers to go…
