Haiku December 21, 2012 Winter Solstice
First day of winter
Wind whips, whistles at window
Temperatures plunge!!
Art Prescription: A low in the 20’s! Well it is the first day of winter! Winter Solstice, also known as Yule, Midwinter, and the Longest Night is indeed the longest night. From here forward the nights shorten and the days lengthen setting off nature’s internal clocks for spring. It’s the most Yin day of the year! Both the astronomical and cultural history of this date are interesting, and Mayans willing and the creek don’t rise, I’ll be back tomorrow!

Art Prescription: I’ve always loved the way light gets reflected in the rain. Even a stoplight on a rainy or misty night creates a wonderful prism of color on the street, a painting!

Art Prescription: This is the time of the year to celebrate all we have to be grateful for!! I’m so lucky to have great friends who trade the woes and joys of life. Life is a roller-coaster! We all experience the ups and downs, the long clicks up the hill…and the exhilarating ride, thrilling…the tenacious curves…and the moment when we catch our breath, and go on to the next ride. Life is ever-changing…put on your seat-belt!! and make sure your best friend is along for the ride!

Art Prescription: So I really walked barefoot to and from my studio today…winter!?! Nice but confusing. I’m ready to wear sweat-shirts and fuzzy socks and have the fire going!!!

Meow howl for chow
Long lick both chops, clean face, purr
Repeat twice a day!
Art Prescription: We have cats! Three! I’d love a dog too, but for now the cats rule! Artist throughout history have studied the long and graceful lines of cat behavior. My favorite is Steinlen! If you have pets they are perfect for gestural sketching…try and capture the essence of dog or cat -itude!
