Haiku August 7, 2012 Life Paths

Life is a long path

Times the woods are dark and deep

Times sun lights the way.

Art Prescription:  The long hot summer may be getting to me a bit. I miss being able to spend extended hours outside sketching. Between the heat and the mosquitoes, I feel a little isolated inside. I’d rather be outside in nature than anywhere!! My studio is nice and air-conditioned, but sketching from life gives me a sense of renewal and vigor. I’m looking forward to three upcoming Art Prescription workshops. The first one is August 25 at the UNC Wellness Center where we will play with pen and ink and expressive painting!! Next October 20 at the NC Botanical Gardens – Expressive painting fall trees. Hope you can make one!! Call me or email if you have any questions 919 608-0247 You don’t have to be a member at the Wellness Center to participate.

Haiku July 24, 2012 Stormy Weather

Wind gust, sideways rain

Summer’s venting her fury

Hot, dry and restless.

Art Prescription:  We all need a release valve. These hot 90 to 100 degree days are sure to build up enough pressure to unleash nature’s fury. We had a little wind blow through today, with a little lightening, and a little thunder! I say little, cause truth be known my cats were seeking shelter! Power went off, triggering the smoke detector when it came back on, and after I found my neighbor’s tree partially down in her front yard. The rest of the tree fortunately is leaning towards the street versus her house. What are you doing this summer? How are you staying focused? Are you restless or productive? Share!!!!!!

Haiku July 2, 2012 Minding the Garden

We reap what we sow

Plant briars, no roses grow

No care, life will wilt.

Art Prescription:  All the health care debate news has got me thinking about reaping what we sow. I’m not sure what the answer is for America, it’s so complicated, but I do know we each have some personal responsibility for our own health and well-being. We only have one pass at this precious life, and our day-to-day choices make a difference in our future.

Haiku June 11, 2012 Rain!!

Drip, drop, drip, drop, pour!

Concentric rings ripple out

Rain rivers down street.

Art Prescription:  Big drifting sheets of rain pour from the grey sky. Perfect! Everything needs a good drenching. I like to walk in the rain…so peaceful…musky earth smells rise up to mingle with fresh air. Frogs are in “hog” or perhaps it should be “frog,” heaven, croaking by the streams. As an artist, the designs made by rain-drops intrigue me. There is an abstract quality to the repeating circles that ripple out and converge. Reminds me that each action creates a new action, a simple rain drop displaces water making tiny round waves hundreds of times larger than the drop. Each moment of life a ripple…

Haiku June 7, 2012 Perception

Waves beat against rocks.

Erosion changes shape, form.

Solid becomes sand.

Art Prescription:  How do you feel about this haiku?

Time equals change, but do you see it as a loss, the rock is gone, or as something new and beautiful, The Grand Canyon!! Life, as with art, is all a matter of perspective.
