Haiku June 25, 2013 Backyard Sketch

Backyard pen and ink

Hummingbirds fly by as I

Capture a moment.

Art Prescription:  I love sketching in my garden!! Simply, sit, watch, sketch with pen and ink. Sometimes when you just sit still nature will come to you. I always wish, oh! need my camera…and then remind myself to just be in the moment.

Haiku June 24, 2013 I Belong

Right where you belong

Are you? Each day a new chance

Possibilities!

Art Prescription:  Do you wake up in the morning and feel a big, long, day is ahead of you with many possibilities? When I write in my journal at bedtime, sometimes I’m amazed at all that goes on in one day…and I like it like that!

Haiku June 22, 2013 Step Outside Comfort Zone

Comfort zone, structure

Rules to live by, rituals.

One step out, now LIVE!

Art Prescription:  I’m guilty of being ritualistic, creature of habit. Worse with age, oh dear!! BUT, the thing I love most about watercolor is it’s ability to not be controlled. The medium itself, allows me to smear, splatter, wash, blend, and just watch the magic of what happens on the page. Art journaling is the perfect place to step outside your comfort zone!!

Haiku June 19, 2013 Summer Ritual

Big, red, ripe, juicy

Fresh produce, farm to market

Tomato sandwich!

Art Prescription:  Summer means juicy, sun-ripened tomatoes. I know there is a lot of argument out there with how to appropriately build a tomato sandwich. Some are strictly BLT advocates…and yes this is a good option. Others say mayonnaise is the essential makings of a tomato sandwich. Me. I’m a purist. Just a freshly sliced tomato on bread and I can taste the sun.

Haiku June 17, 2013 Sturdy Construction

Nestled on branches

Stands test of wind and rain, proof

Sturdy construction.

Art Prescription:  We have been watching a robin’s nest for a couple of weeks. When recent thunderstorms ripped through here, I worried about the nest. Proof of the builder’s determination, the nest sits strong and steady! Amazing!

Haiku June 16, 2013 Recycle

Recycled papers

Cut out like paper-dolls, make

A junk mail garden!

Art Prescription:  Here’s a mate for my last “junk mail garden” piece. A fun way to recycle, cut your junk mail up into shapes and paste onto a surface. I’m using watercolor here. Paint and highlight your cut flowers, and draw some stems and leaves, and now you have a garden.

Haiku June 15, 2013 Country Lane

Ride to the country.

Urban sprawl, once rich farm fields,

Tobacco, corn, soy.

Art Prescription:  We took a day trip down to our very good friend’s “country house.” The old homestead is close to where my grandmother used to live, so a bit of a drive down country lane. What used to be rows and rows of crop is now rows and rows of houses and apartments. Once you are out far enough the familiar fields begin to stretch across the blue, cloudless sky. I love seeing meadows with ponds and horses, cows grazing, and old red barns!
