Haiku August 2, 2012 Perspective – Cats

Meow greets you home

Herd up the stairs for dinner

Cold nose, make biscuits.

Art Prescription:  We have three cats…we fostered a family of felines. Adopted two out! Kept the mother and two kittens. They are adults now each with distinctive personalities. They are entertaining and lovey! I might have been meant to live on a farm. If I could I’d have lots of other animals…a couple of dogs…chickens for eggs…goats…Always fantasized about getting up at four in the morning to feed livestock…this is where you hear the record scratch!  Do you have a life-style that you fantasize about? tell it!

Haiku July 31, 2012 Prelude to fall

Crickets prelude fall

Cloudy cooler,  subtle shifts

Goodbye hot July.

Art Prescription:  Another July come and gone. We have many summery days left here in NC, actually on through September. But there are subtle changes that I welcome.  Use all your senses to pick up on a change in the light, changes in bird behavior, changes in the cricket’s hum. Be present…notice.

July 30, 2012 Purpose

Path, purpose, life force

Resilience, forward track

Find the it right now.

Art Prescription:  Picked my “Backyard Bouquet” painting up today from the framer. Makes me so happy!! Everything in life needs a frame!

Haiku July 27, 2012 True Desire

Two birds land on branch

Fill warm air with true desire

A nest awaits eggs.

Art Prescription:  Birds and squirrels are not shy about mating right out in the open. It’s all about the business of reproducing. There is fore “play,” head bobbing, wing flapping, certain show-off high notes of song. Many bird species mate for life…awe….Squirrels, well, a bit like rabbits. Nature is persistent though, and to watch the dedication of fledgling parents is to know deep down that nature and nurture reign. Opening night for the summer 2012 Olympics…may the athletes have the focus, endurance, and satisfaction of putting their best efforts forward!

Haiku July 26, 2012 Hot out there!

Hot! Morning doves coo,

Air conditioners spin, roar

Dragonflies flicker.

Art Prescription:  Has summer always been this hot? Seems 90 degrees plus forecast for weeks on end. Our backyard bird bath is very popular; families of blue birds enjoying a dip, so cute how they stand guard for one another. The simple pleasure of bird watching always brings me joy. I think I saw some sort of Tanager!! I’m reminded through my own ah-hahs that it really is about the simple pleasures.

Haiku July 25, 2012 Haiku in the breeze

Path warm to bare feet

Chickadees twitter and chirp

Crickets hum in grass.

Art Prescription:  Sam and I rode bikes over to the NC Botanical Garden this morning to see “Haiku in the Breeze,” an interactive exhibit put on by the NC Haiku Society. Folks were invited to write a haiku and tie it up in the garden. Do you haiku?

Haiku July 24, 2012 Stormy Weather

Wind gust, sideways rain

Summer’s venting her fury

Hot, dry and restless.

Art Prescription:  We all need a release valve. These hot 90 to 100 degree days are sure to build up enough pressure to unleash nature’s fury. We had a little wind blow through today, with a little lightening, and a little thunder! I say little, cause truth be known my cats were seeking shelter! Power went off, triggering the smoke detector when it came back on, and after I found my neighbor’s tree partially down in her front yard. The rest of the tree fortunately is leaning towards the street versus her house. What are you doing this summer? How are you staying focused? Are you restless or productive? Share!!!!!!

Haiku July 23, 2012 Cloud Formation

Big billowing clouds

Rise upward. Grey bellies full

Flash! Light sparks the air!

Art Prescription:  This time of year with the level of heat and humidity, afternoon thunderstorms are predictable. On my evening walk the barometric pressure seems palpable. The sky is full of big plumes of clouds, layers of atmospheric turmoil. Storms are another chance to respect and be in awe of nature! Ever tried to paint a stormy sky? This is where watercolor “blooms” come in handy!

Haiku July 21, 2012 Crow Caws

Crow caws chant, still air

Late warm  sun casts long shadows

Sweat rolls down my face.

Art Prescription:  Sometimes it’s interesting to just walk and listen. What’s the most distant sound you hear? Walking can be a meditation…step after step…being in the moment with what’s going on around you.
