Haiku July 20, 2012 Change is hard.

Metamorphosis

The caterpillar grows wings

Drinks life’s new nectar.

Art Prescription:  One constant in life is change. And it is probably one of the most difficult parts about being human. Each day we have to accept changes in our bodies, our environment, our jobs, our families. The challenge may not be the change itself, but how we cope. Change is hard, especially for folks like me who are creatures of habit. My husband sometimes compares me to “Rain Man,” because out of my routine I get a little anxious. Guilty as charged. On the other hand change is sometimes good. Something may happen to jar us out of our contented routine, get our attention, and cause us to have to shift our thinking a bit. Like a slug being pulled off a rock, we hold on, until the moment we are plopped down elsewhere to find new balance.

Haiku July 18, 2012 Home

Where-ever we roam

There’s no place like home, and cats

Blooms, garden glory.

Art Prescription:  Was nice to get a change of scenery, and nice to be right back in my very own back-yard watering my garden. My Gerber Daisies are bursting with blooms. I love the young blossoms as they curl their way up. Life is complicated, and if you can be happy and content just by the essence of the place you call home, that is fortunate. Some souls wander their whole lives never knowing the meaning of true home. For me to do art, I must be grounded in time and space!!

Change of scenery

A cure for the listless soul

Explore a new town.

Art Prescription:  Perhaps the heat is getting to me…day after day of endless sweat. Or maybe I need a change of scenery. I’ve been thinking a lot about boat scenes. I love a harbor in the evening. There is a town called Newbern in NC that is right on the river. Bike trails take you around town and river-front. Sounds like a day trip…let’s see: sketch books, watercolor pencils, ink, an adventurous spirit.

Haiku July 15, 2012 Ponderous

Oppressive still heat

Deep thoughts about life, living

Dragonfly flickers.

Art Prescription:  Life is like a river, swirling water changes constantly. All making its way to the sea, where there are high tides and low tides. What to do when you are feeling a bit like a bauble floating along? Walk…think (too much)…accept where you are right now. One of my favorite artists, Jeanne Carbonetti, says there is always a void before a great idea.

Haiku July 12, 2012 Your Story

Life is a moment

Happy dogs panting, pure love

Total devotion.

Art Prescription:  After work today I set out on a bike ride around my neighborhood. I always run into all my vicarious dogs. I love dogs and with three cats in the house, I have to get my doggy time during my outings. Dogs are all about the moment. Tail wagging, leash tangling, glad to see you, joy! I think dogs, and cats, live in the moment. They are either asleep, playing, walking, or eating. They don’t analyze the past or worry about the future, unless it’s when their next treat is. We humans worry and think about it all. Saw this today here http://commonhealth.wbur.org/2012/01/storytelling-for-mental-health-boost

“The actual things that happen to you may have less of an impact on your mental health than the things you tell yourself about them.”

It seems how we define our experiences makes a difference in how we approach life. Are you a survivor or a victim?

Haiku July 11, 2012 Cool Rain

Morning walk, fresh air

Cleansed by steady rain showers

Water droplets bead.

Art Prescription:  What a refreshing change to have cool rainy weather after a week of 100 degrees. An early morning walk out into my garden reveals silvery rain drops on petals and leaves. This is a good drawing practice. It’s all about shadow and light. Next time you see a drop really look closely…do a study of one leaf or one flower petal.

Haiku July 9, 2012 Cool Shade

Cool blue forest shade

A hide-out from torrid sun

Shelter from the heat.

Art Prescription:  We are breaking records here in NC for consecutive days above 100 degrees. Mid-day is quiet, as no one is out walking or jogging. My backyard bird bath is a popular hang-out. Parents fly in with their fledgelings, take a quick dip, then land on branches above for preening – teaching the young how it’s done. In the morning the path through our neighborhood is pretty shady. I’m working on a hummingbird painting! What are you working on?
