Haiku June 1, 2012 Know Thyself

Rain pitter patters

Tree frogs lull,  solitude reins

Peace, quiet, steady.

Art Prescription:  A good steady rain on my studio roof makes for the perfect solitude. While I wait for my paint to dry, I stretch out on the floor and just listen. I’m most peaceful when I have time and space to create…to let my muse wander. It’s important to know oneself – to know what makes you tick – to know what you crave, what you must have to live fully. Know thyself – do you?

Haiku May 31, 2012 Poolside

Splash of chlorine wafts

Smell of coconut lotion

Hot, it’s poolside time.

Art Prescription:  My neighborhood pool is open for business. People are out of their winter hide-away and into swim-suits by the pool. Kids splash about with floats while mothers and fathers tend to their youngest swimmer. Happy memories for these kids, summer at the pool. As a kid, summer lasted a lifetime, and the pool was the center of our universe…swim for fun, swim practice, swim meet, swim all day long. Course their were Popsicles  involved, especially during the break each hour for “rest” time. Each season brings about a new set of memories old and new…it’s summer time!

Haiku May 27, 2012 Wide Country

Vast flat fields, new crops

Red barns, white houses, horses

Sky meets horizon.

Art Prescription:  Took a road trip to Clinton, NC today.  A relatively short ride from Chapel Hill lands us in farm country and field after field of fresh green crops. In NC farmers grow tobacco, soybean, cotton, corn, wheat, tomatoes, cows, pigs, and families. What a total juxtaposition from New York City! Joy to be able to see and experience both. Where you are is where you are, and if you enjoy the scenery it makes life sweet.

Haiku May 22, 2012 Crowd

Like a New Yorker

We weave in and out of crowd

Everyone on go!

Art Prescription: New York city is not for the slow and methodical. Not for the wanderer who wishes to pause and take it all in…do that and someone will run you over…maybe a bus!! Walking the streets I heard not one word of English, except for the highly accented personnel selling tickets to shows, comedy, bus rides, psychics, weed, or a photo with Spiderman, the Naked Cowboy – hmmmm, or the folks just flat out begging for money. “The Melting Pot.”  How extremely lucky are we to be able to drop in and visit this magnificent city and fly out again to the green, green, grass of NC. Knowing where you belong is worth a life-time of wants!!

Haiku May 19, 2012 City

Backyard birds, pigeons.

A flock lined-up over noise

Traffic, honk, siren.

Art Prescription:  I’m just not a city girl. I miss my quiet backyard with my garden and studio. And I’m perfectly okay with that!! You cannot fit a square peg into a round hole, and you shouldn’t try. My booth is set! Looks peaceful, airy, and romantic. Makes me happy to see this! Show starts tomorrow. My mantra: “be true to yourself.”

Haiku May 4, 2012 Squirrely

Squirrel  from the start

Bushy tail twitches, eyes watch

Nature or nurture?

Art Prescription:  A baby squirrel crossed my path today. Little rat with a tail. And yet all the squirrel-like mannerisms were apparent. Did he/she learn this from a parent or is it just DNA? Either way she knew just what to do…swish her little tail and bolt up a tree with athletic finesse. Some things we are born with and some things we learn along the way. Either way it’s all about survival. Honor your senses!

Haiku April 25, 2012 Walk

Wren chortles tree top

Beagle bays at larger dog

Footsteps patter path.

Art Prescription:  Beautiful day. Hard to stay focused and get work done. Sam home and we went for a walk. This time of day I find much amusement in the neighborhood dogs. Sounds tell us so much about what is going on in our environment!

Haiku April 22, 2012 Earth Day

Yoga in the rain

Birds serenade while grass grows

Sunday, time to play.

Art Prescription:  Finally a day to just play with paint! My studio is clean and ready for a show, which gives me hours to explore mixed media. I’ve been interested in graffiti-like effects lately. Playing with acrylics and spray paint. Tapped into my 16 year old self today with this mixed-media work. What do you remember from being 16?

Bike wheels round and round

White wildflowers line the trail

Blackberry cobbler!

Art Prescription:  We rode bikes on the American Tobacco Trail today. What was once a busy rail line to Durham, NC (at one point about 25 passenger trains came in a day), is now a meandering paved bike trail that leads to downtown. The ride takes you through kudzu infested woods, along newer and older sections of housing, and lands you right smack in the middle of the Durham Bulls Ballpark, restaurants, etc. We continued our ride to check out my friends art installation parasolb.com  What a wonderful day filled with lots of scenery and surprises!!  It’s good to wander! Oh, and the white wildflowers are blackberries!
