Haiku April 23, 2012 Cold

April, cold wind whips

Winter’s final arctic chill

Shorts will have to wait.

Art Prescription:  Brrrrr….chilly day. Had to turn my heat on in my studio to knock the chill off. Fortunately it will not freeze, so new annuals and fresh blossoms are safe. I’m glad my art show this weekend is inside.

Come see me in the Carolina Theater Sat. and Sun. April 28, and 29. Part of the Durham Art Walk!!

Haiku April 22, 2012 Earth Day

Yoga in the rain

Birds serenade while grass grows

Sunday, time to play.

Art Prescription:  Finally a day to just play with paint! My studio is clean and ready for a show, which gives me hours to explore mixed media. I’ve been interested in graffiti-like effects lately. Playing with acrylics and spray paint. Tapped into my 16 year old self today with this mixed-media work. What do you remember from being 16?

Haiku April 21, 2012 Saturday

Saturday at home

French toast and bird song, nice walk

Spaghetti dinner.

Art Prescription:  Long Saturday! Sam worked in the yard and I cleaned my studio for an open studio Monday. Working around home is both tiring and relaxing. Good thing I married someone who likes home as much as I do!!

Haiku April 20, 2012 Lilac

Old-fashion lilac

Grew well at my grandmother’s

Now I have my own.

Art Prescription:  This is the best year yet for my lilac. I cut a vase full and brought them in. The whole room is scented! I took photos with my studio in the background, and this is a must paint flower!! Really need a scratch and sniff!

Haiku April 19, 2012 Crows

Sweet honeysuckle

Crow carries a piece of straw

Disappears in tree.

Art Prescription: Walking through my short path in the woods from the bus from work, the scent of honeysuckle filled my lungs. Ahhhh….I thought this is life! Then I heard a crow caw and saw her sitting tree-top beak filled with nesting material. I watched her as she circled around, to make sure no one saw her. Then she glided into a cedar tree and disappeared. Secret nest.  This could mimicked the way I feel after leaving a busy day at my nursing job. I return to my nest and disappear…happily.

White fluffy seeds float

Spread by the wind they flourish

Snow-like in April.

Art Prescription:  At one point today the air was filled with seed pods being blown about by the wind to find a place to plant and grow. Nature has several ways to spread seed, by wind, by bird, by insect. Being efficient is something I strive for everyday!

Bike wheels round and round

White wildflowers line the trail

Blackberry cobbler!

Art Prescription:  We rode bikes on the American Tobacco Trail today. What was once a busy rail line to Durham, NC (at one point about 25 passenger trains came in a day), is now a meandering paved bike trail that leads to downtown. The ride takes you through kudzu infested woods, along newer and older sections of housing, and lands you right smack in the middle of the Durham Bulls Ballpark, restaurants, etc. We continued our ride to check out my friends art installation parasolb.com  What a wonderful day filled with lots of scenery and surprises!!  It’s good to wander! Oh, and the white wildflowers are blackberries!

Bee lands on petals

Sips nectar while picking up

Tiny grains, pollen.

Art Prescription:  I started my day out at the North Carolina Botanical Gardens. Took my backpack filled with supplies for outdoor sketching. There is so much in bloom, hard to choose a subject. I settled on a patch of Wild Geranium and also did a pen and ink of Ginko. When you sit in a garden for a period of time flowers bloom before your very eyes!
