Haiku April 6, 2013 Mason Farm Trees

Cathedral of trees

Arches path, Purple Nettle

Covers ground. Bees buzz!

Art Prescription:  At Mason Farm,   “My” owl is still sitting in her stag (a “lively” dead tree).  She nests in her hole by the creek as the sun crosses during the day. At night she hunts. My imagination thinks this would be a cool start to a nature book….just so magical to see!

Haiku April 5, 2013 Rhythm of Life

Water feels like silk

Relish the quiet, just swim

Rhythm of the pool.

Art Prescription:  Loud people and places drain me. After a while of sensory overload I feel you could bounce a quarter off my skin. The perfect antidote to re-balance myself is a swim! The steady strokes and silence of the water soothes my nervous system. And of course – expressive art journaling!

just be you

Haiku April 3, 2013 High Heels

She hikes at the mall

Legs as long as a flagpole

The sport of shopping.

Art Prescription:  For those of you who have been following my blog, you will see this is a radical departure from my usual ramblings about nature and the woods.  For girls like me who actually prefer the woods to the mall…sometimes it’s good to take a walk on the “wild” side!!

Haiku April 2, 2013 Verve

New watercolor

Turquoise! Verve! blend of blue-green

A vase of flowers!

Art Prescription:  I went to my favorite art-store today for canvases for a project I’m doing for UNC Hospitals. Of course no art-store expedition is complete without buying a new paint color! I bought a luscious turquoise and viola…flowers!

Haiku March 31, 2013 Trout-lily

If Trout-lilys played

A musical instrument.

They’d be violins.

Art Prescription:  One of the main reasons I like sketching live is to feel the personality of a plant. As a certified botanical illustrator, we were taught to tell the plant’s story. Get your sketchbook and go out and draw…think you can’t draw? Just let your hand follow your eye. Get your brain, and what you think you see out of the way….just follow the contours of the subject.
