Your external expression

Does not define you.

Art Prescription:  Long, lived day. Woke early, coffee (Facebook, yep), walk, swim, read, and then went to Scrap Exchange. This place is plundering heaven…junk galore…paper extravagansa.

Great finds for art journaling! I bought a $3.00 bag of mixed papers and found lots of vintage patterns.

Fresh Basil July 16, 2014

Freshly washed by rain

Nothing compares, sweet basil

For corn succotash.

Art Prescription:  The scent of basil after a good summer rain is intoxicating. So I brought some inside to add to my fresh corn off-the-cob and tomato succotash.

Part of my mission for the Art Prescription is to encourage others to create. Keep an art journal, paint, or sketch. I’m developing some materials you can use in your next mix-media project available in my shop https://www.etsy.com/shop/beverlydyer?ref=l2-shopheader-name

Vision Journal October 14, 2013

He courts her with worm

They mate for life, cardinals.

Year-round backyard birds!

Art Prescription:  I taught an Art Prescription Workshop today, Fabulous You! I asked my group to paint in their journals what they want more of in their lives. What does YES look like? We started off with random watercolor brush-strokes and washes, and then we moved to imagery. It always inspires me to see the art that happens when people give themselves permission to play. Here is my vision page:

Haiku July, 11, 2013 Steady Drizzle

Set out for a walk

Clouds gathered, distant rumble

Rain drops fall, I’m wet!!

Art Prescription:  This time of year a walk in a steady drizzle can actually be refreshing. Then my neighbor’s dog took off running wild through the woods, freaked by the thunder. I went off after him, poison ivy and all! Like a deer he shot through the bramble. Luckily he and his owner are both safely home, not sure who is more shaken. For me, a warm shower and a glass of wine should do.

Haiku April 9, 2013 Hot Tea

Hi folks, this is a day late because I’m wrestling with a virus. To stay true to the mission of the Art Prescription, the power of art to heal, I’m going to write a bit!

Piping hot Chai tea

Scent of cinnamon and cloves

Cardamom , ginger.

Art Prescription:  Just because you are sick doesn’t mean you have to be miserable:  A few thoughts.

1.  Admit you are sick. Denial usually doesn’t work. Viruses will show you who’s boss.

2.  Take a sick day. Your co-workers will understand, plus they don’t want what you have!

3.  Creature comforts. Furry beings will do their best to comfort you.

4. Hot tea. Keep some special teas around for these days. Serve it in a pretty bone china cup.

5.  Fresh air…get some, even if you run the risk of your neighbors seeing you with bed head.

6.  Clean sheets…get out of bed long enough to change the sheets. This may be your exercise of the day, but worth it.

7.  Read indulgently. If this happened more often, you may avoid being sick in the first place.

8.  Write in your journal.  Writing boost the immune system and may get something off your chest. The lungs are where   we carry grief, and most viruses effect our upper respiratory system.

9.  Posh tissues. This is no time to scrimp on tissues. Buy the most expensive, soft, tissues you can find. Have plenty!

10.  Find positives! This too will pass. Try and focus on some positives. While your body rest allow your imagination to explore what you might do when you are all better. (Note: it’s really hard for me to be unproductive) Read # 1 – 9 again!!

If you have some sick day secrets please share. Be Well!!

Haiku March 1, 2013 Evergreens and Buds

Showy evergreens

Delight brown and grey woodlands

Trees burst with new buds!

Art Prescription:  As winter has a few final days, it’s cold and windy, and grey. As much as I love the sculptural quality of bare winter trees, it’s nice to see some color. The pines, spruces, and hollies provide lovely greens throughout winter.

Haiku February 15, 2013 Essence

Capture pure essence

With a simple line, gesture

Sketch a piece of life.

Art Prescription:  I love drawing quick pen and ink sketches of my cats! Keep a sketchbook handy and try capturing some moments of your day…a piece of fruit, a pet, birds at feeder, just keep your hand moving across the page! You can capture a lot with a few lines!
