Haiku January 17, 2013 Snow Day

Chance of snow flurries

Stirs fun childhood memories

A day off! to start!!

Art Prescription:  The excitement of a winter storm warning here in North Carolina permeates the air. Bet the grocery shelves are stripped clean of milk and bread!! Kind-of funny, kind of real! Confession…I find myself looking out the window…is it snowing yet!!

Haiku December 27, 2012 December Moon

Stars twinkle clear sky

Lovely ring circles full moon

Light for longest nights!

Art Prescription:  Evening walks take on new meanings in winter. Instead of watching the sun set, I get to watch the moon rise. Tonight the moon is full…called by Native Americans the “Full Cold Moon,” or the “Full Long Nights Moon.” This time of year temperatures dive, 20’s expected here in North Carolina. Since it’s hard to capture the beauty of a moon lit sky with a camera (unless you are a pro), I encourage you to sketch and/or paint this magical winter scene!

The Full Cold Moon; or the Full Long Nights Moon – December During this month the winter cold fastens its grip, and nights are at their longest and darkest. It is also sometimes called the Moon before Yule. The term Long Night Moon is a doubly appropriate name because the midwinter night is indeed long, and because the Moon is above the horizon for a long time. The midwinter full Moon has a high trajectory across the sky because it is opposite a low Sun.

Haiku December 22, 2012 Flock as One

A wave of blackbirds

Move as one mass over trees

Wings vibrate the air!

Art Prescription:  Instead of the mall, my love and I walked almost 6 miles in the woods today, which seemed to be brimming with activity…snow coming? As we walked our familiar path a flock of black-birds came up across the trees with an amazing presence. The sound of thousands of birds chirping, and the thunder-like vibration of their one for all flight, shook the woods. I stood in the brown, grassy meadow in complete awe, and wholly grateful for this serene moment.
